Margaret O’Brien will be a great State Representative for citizens of the 61st District! The first time I heard of Margaret O’Brien, she was advocating for voters, encouraging the Portage City Council, Mayor & City Manager to allow the issue of Special Assessments for Roads to be decided with an election. The issue had become contentious with the continued widening of Oakland Drive. Residents on this street who were losing property to increased traffic were being asked to pay a significant burden of the cost of the road work. Citizens like me, who use Oakland Drive every day, were not contributing to the cost, though we would surely enjoy the benefits. Allowing the citizens of Portage to vote to determine what is fair, was the right way to go. Thanks to Margaret’s willingness to speak up, ask questions, pursue options and represent the citizens, this issue has been resolved to the benefit of our entire community. I urge you to vote for Margaret O'Brien for State Representative on August 5th. She is a wonderful woman, but I wouldn't ask you to vote for her on that basis alone.
Margaret will be an excellent legislator because she is smart, principled and compassionate. I have known her since she was a college student. Over these years, I have seen her bring her energy, insights and skills to many different roles. She has helped runaway youth, pregnant teenagers, non-profit organizations, home owners, business owners and many more. She has been an active community volunteer and has served in local civic groups.
Since her first election in 2003, Margaret has served our community as a member of the Portage City Council. She has been an excellent, devoted and courageous public servant. I was especially impressed with her leadership in restructuring the matter of special assessments for road improvements in our City. Margaret has a talent for carefully and accurately defining a problem. This is a critical but often overlooked step to positive outcomes. She leads
