Portage, MI —State Representative Margaret O’Brien, Republican, announced today she is seeking election to the Michigan State Senate in the 20th District, which includes all of Kalamazoo County.
“As a lifelong Kalamazoo County resident, I am committed to this community,” O’Brien said. “Southwest Michigan deserves a leader who demands accountability in government and has a strong track record of providing solutions.”
Elected in 2010 to the State House, O’Brien brought local public service to the State House. She served on the Portage City Council from 2003-2010 where she was a champion of transparency, fiscal responsibility and customer service.
“As a mom of two, I share the same concerns of other parents in our community. It is important that we do more to create jobs in Michigan, and implement common sense solutions to Michigan problems,” O’Brien states. “Michigan is making a comeback. We balanced the State budget, on time without gimmicks. Housing prices are rebounding, population is growing again, and we can’t go back to the old days of taxing and spending.”
O’Brien currently represents the 61st House District, which includes the City of Portage, Oshtemo Township, Texas Township, Prairie Ronde Township, Schoolcraft Township and the Villages of Schoolcraft and Vicksburg. The 20th Senate Seat will be open since Senator Tonya Schuitmaker recently announced she would be seeking re-election in the 26th Senate district as a result of redistricting.
Since taking office in 2011, O’Brien has been elected to leadership twice as Associate Speaker Pro Tempore of the House. She serves on the Oversight, Transportation and Infrastructure, Criminal Justice, Insurance and Tax Policy Committees. She is Vice Chair of the House Tax Policy Committee.
During her tenure, O’Brien has sponsored legislation improving public education, lowering taxes, protecting our most vulnerable and removing regulations that hurt small businesses, particularly in Southwest Michigan.
Prior to serving in the House, O’Brien was a social worker with Catholic Family Services. She has been a REALTOR® for the last 10 years with RE/MAX Advantage. O’Brien has lived in Portage for the last 22 years where she lives with her husband and two teenaged children.
Margaret is serving her second term in the Michigan House of Representatives, she was chosen to be Associate Speaker Pro Tem both terms. Her focus has been on tax reform, common sense spending, and creating an improved climate for Michigan job creation. Margaret is married to Nick, a CPA with and together they have two children.
